5 Tips on Choosing an Epic Essay Topic

Know the Essay Type

So, this time, the professor has given you the freedom to select an essay topic to write about. He or she probably told you that the ability to develop a good topic is an essential skill for any student because it tests your analytical and creative skills, and this is exactly right.

Regardless of the class you’re taking, you need to come up with an interesting and relevant topic that your instructor and fellow students would be interested in knowing more about. Although selecting such a topic may seem like an easy thing to have to do but it can be quite difficult to develop a narrowed down topic that will make research and writing easy.

5 Tips on Choosing an Epic Essay Topic

If you feel like you need some help with choosing a good topic for your essay, feel free to follow these steps:

1. Know the Essay Type

It defines how you should approach writing about the topic, so you need to define the type of essay you’ll be writing. For example, if your task is to take a position on a certain issue – this would be an argumentative essay – then you need to choose a topic that’s controversial and has two opposing sides.

Next, a comparative essay, on the other hand, requires you to identify two items such as schools of thought and speculate over their main features, and advantages and disadvantages in terms of addressing a problem or an issue (for example, compare two types of treatment of the same disease and define the most effective one if possible).

2. Make Sure that You Pick an Interesting Topic

If you want to make the writing process easier and more enjoyable, try this proven technique: choose a topic that you consider interesting or feel strongly about. There’s a chance that your instructor has also advised to “select your own topic of interest,” so you should look for topics that you truly find exciting and fascinating.

For example, let’s say you’re taking a business leadership class and basketball is one of your biggest interests. You can select a great player and analyze his or her leadership skills on the basketball court and define what business leaders can learn from that. As the result, you’ll enjoy writing about someone you admire while researching a topic relevant to your class.

So, to define a topic that you care about, ask yourself the following questions:

• In this class, what knowledge areas I find the most interesting?
• Why do I find them interesting?

Don’t forget to get the professor’s approval of the topic, though. We don’t want you to be among the first in line to get academic help from him or her when the topic you’ve formulated turns out to be poor or irrelevant.

3. Remember about the Word Limit

Has your instructor provided you with a set of specific requirements and a rubric for the essay? Chances are that the requirements state that you should not exceed a specific word limit (typically around 500 words). This is also important to keep in mind because you can easily go over that limit and lose a lot of time.

Besides, going over a limit also means that you didn’t follow the instructions given by the professor, which is to be avoided to maximize the chance of the highest grade.

4.  Make Your Topic Manageable

Let’s suppose that you already have a topic in mind. To make sure that your selection is the best as it can be, you need to check whether it’s too broad. For example, a topic “Type 2 Diabetes” would be way too broad for an essay for a nursing class because it would need to cover a number of aspects such as symptoms, causes, treatment, prevention, and others.

That’s too much for a 500-word essay, obviously, so you can narrow it down by focusing on one of these aspects and limit it by a certain factor such as community. As the result, you can narrow it down to something like this “Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Strategies in Rural Communities.” This makes research and writing much easier.

5. Ensure that Resources for Writing are there

Finding out that a topic lacks reliable resources to get information from would be a major challenge that could create a need for a new topic. So, to avoid that, make sure that the topic has good, scholarly resources by researching related keywords online. For example, for the aforementioned “Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Strategies in Rural Communities,” you can Google the topic or the following keyword combinations:

• Preventing type 2 diabetes in rural areas
• The diabetes rate in rural communities in the U.S.

Chances are that you’ll find enough quality materials to start planning your work. Just go for keywords that best describe your topic and see what kind of results you get.

Over to You

The ability to develop a good topic for an essay is an essential skill, and you’ve just improved it by learning how to do it properly. Hopefully, you’ll use these tips the next time your professor gives you an essay assignment to define an amazing topic.
